Community/Granite State Pioneer Club
The Granite State Pioneer Club is a
philanthropic organization that was founded by the employees of Granite State Telephone in 1992 to
serve the communities of southern New Hampshire. The Club is an active chapter of the Independent
Telephone Pioneer Association, a national, non-profit widely known for its charity work and
philanthropic support of a variety of associations. Over 40 Granite State Telephone employees are
members of the Granite State Pioneer Club. They organize various volunteer events throughout the
year and have made contributions to numerous charitable causes.
Community Projects:
- Hurricane Katrina - In 2005, the Pioneer Club donated $1,000 to the Foundation for Rural Education and Development's Hurricane Katrina Fund. The fund was established to help independent telephone company employees and their families in Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi where hurricane Katrina did the most damage. One hundred percent of donations received benefited telephone company employees who were victims of hurricane Katrina and were unable to rebuild their lives using the Federal Emergency Management Agency insurance and other traditional means.
- The Annual Loren P. Rand Memorial Golf Tournament - currently in its 14th year, this fundraising event is hosted each June in memory of Granite State Telephone's past president, Loren P. Rand. In 2005, the tournament raised over $5,400 for Pioneer Club philanthropic efforts, including donations to the fire departments within our service area and the Foundation for Rural Education and Development's Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund.
- Fire Departments in Our Service Areas - In 2005, the Pioneers donated $1,000 to the Weare and Sandown Fire Departments. The year prior, donations were made to the Chester and Hillsboro Fire Departments.
- Annual Leslie A. Todd Walk/Run for Breast Cancer - Since 2003, the Pioneer club has donated money to this annual Weare event, which raises money for breast cancer research. All proceeds from the event are donated to the American Cancer Society's Hillsboro County Division of Making Strides for Breast Cancer.
- Hillsboro House Nursing Home - For the past six years, the Pioneer club has donated Christmas gifts to residents of Hillsboro House Nursing Home. Last year, the club donated over $500 in gifts including clothing, CD boom boxes, and cameras.
- Sponsor-A-Highway Program - An annual tradition since 1995, Granite State Pioneers gather
four times a year to keep a one-mile stretch of Route 114 on either side of Granite State Telephone's
corporate office in Weare, NH clean of trash and debris.
- Sponsoring Project KidCare as part of a national effort to provide parents with personal
safety ID booklets for their children. This includes finger printing, which is done by the local
Police, a photograph of the child, and a booklet containing important information about the child.
