Outstanding scholar receives $1,000 for 2009-10 academic year.

Weare, NH – June 24, 2009 – Granite State Telephone awarded a scholarship to an outstanding scholar in its service area on June 3, 2009. Nicholas Campono of Weare, NH received $1,000 for the 2009-10 academic year. A scholarship certificate was presented by Granite State Telephone president, Susan Rand King, on behalf of the Foundation for Rural Education and Development (FRED).

Mr. Campono graduated this spring from John Stark Regional High School, and will begin his freshman year at Bentley University this fall to pursue a career in business administration marketing.

"Granite State Telephone was proud to sponsor and recommend Nicholas Campono for the FRED Scholarship," explains Susan Rand King, president. "Mr. Campono's strong academic history and determination to be an exemplary member of the community made him an excellent candidate for a FRED Scholarship. I am confident that with further education and resources he will become an even stronger asset to his rural community in the future."

Each year, FRED recognizes outstanding students who have rural backgrounds, are interested in pursuing careers in the telecommunications industry, or show an interest in returning to rural America. This year, FRED awarded $72,500 in scholarships to 59 students nationwide.

FRED is a charitable organization established in 1989 by rural telephone companies like Granite State Telephone to address the educational and developmental needs of rural areas.
